3. Training programs

‘What has helped me most during this training is the opportunity to learn how to use my experiences professionally. My experiences have taught me a lot in life, but they do not teach me how best to use them to support others.’

What do experts by experience involved think of specific training programs for the development of experiental knowledge?

Did they have any training themselves? What was the added value? You will find the opinions of the experts by experience involved in the project here.

    Inspiring Practices

In several Universities (of Applied Sciences), experts by experience are recruited through service user organisations. These experts by experience often work as volunteers and receive on-the-job training provided by the organisation or the University. As inspiring practices, we selected the mobilisation course (SWE-UK-NL) (3.2 & 3.3), in which social work students and people with experiental knowledge develop projects of community work together.

In Flanders and the Netherlands, experiental expertise has been professionalised. Educational programs lead to a certificate or diploma. As inspiring practices, we selected a bachelor and master programmes of the University of Applied Sciences Windesheim (NL), and the educational  programmes of De Link in Flanders (BE).

These courses are supported by national/regional guidelines. In the Netherlands, a quality system Experiential Expertise has been developed, in which a knowledge base (generic module) and curricula for training courses of Experiential Experts at different educational levels have been elaborated.

In Flanders, a professional qualification file on experts by experience has been drawn up in which the intended competences for professional experts by experience are listed in detail. Both documents are in Dutch.
