Framework for integrating experiential knowledge

Framework for integrating experiential knowledge, experimental learning, and user involvement in curricula of Social Work and Nursing Education. University Agder, Norway

Information

On this page we want to highlight important organizational frames which need to be considered to include experiential knowledge in higher education.

We are describing important organizational factors according to students, Experts by experiences and teachers, and on different levels; political, administrative and didactical.

The information you will find here are prepared by colleagues at the University of Agder, in Norway, and are based on information and good practices  from partners in the Erasmus+ project Experiential knowledge in higher education (2021-2024).

We hope this webpage can be useful for institutions that wants to integrate experiential knowledge in their educations.

Political and strategic factors

White paper and political guidelines in different countries can support and promote experiential learning in different ways. We will give you some examples which our partners have described.

Administrative factors

Administrative factors can play an important role when it comes to implementation of experiential learning. This can be about formal agreements between the university and collaboration partners (user organizations, professional services, workplaces etc.) or time/numbers of hours for the teaching activity. It can also be about contracts, agreements according to the specific events/teaching activity, payment or fee for experts by experience or how to recruits service users or experts by experience.

Pedagogical / didactical factors

Pedagogical factors will demand different organizational frames, and the organizational frames will decide (to a certain degree) what kind of pedagogical or didactical method is possible to use. That is why it is important for us to give examples of organizational factors that affect pedagogical or didactical possibility to conduct experiential learning.
