1.1 Examples of involvement in education given by experts by experience themselves

Interviews with experts by experience involved in the partner Universities (of Applied Sciences) show that they take up different tasks in higher education and, as a result, assume different roles. There are differences in levels of participation. Below you can find a list that can be inspiring when thinking about what tasks and roles an expert by experience can take up in your higher education institution.

    • Co-teaching in theoretical courses
    • Co-teaching in training courses: role-playing – observation of roleplays and giving feedback on communication and interaction
    • Co-preparing lessons – creating content – working collaboratively to co-produce new knowledge and resources.
    • Dialogue in Full day meeting with first year students
    • Testimonials in formal teaching and/or workshop lessons
    • Conducting workshops
    • Self-help group simulations with students
    • Working with the students in the realisation of the apprenticeship experience
    • Supervise students during their practical placement
    • Supervising study afternoons
    • Supervising (multi-day) study trips
    • Supervising group assignments/ research assignments
    • Attending informal meetings (important to really be part of the higher education institution)
    • Co-assessing/ co-testing exams
    • Co-researching in Research projects
    • Making test questions
    • work in co-production ways to ensure ‘nothing about us without us’.
    • Service users and carers are the fabric of social work education. We want to be included in design and decisions from the outset of the educational curriculum.
    • involvement in recruitment and selection of social work students, co-producing module content, student’s placements and assessment of their portfolios.
    • involvement in evaluating activities. For example we evaluate our experiences of interviewing students and that often leads to changes in the interview process such as changing questions that we ask students. We could be more involved in evaluating other aspects of our work such as student assessments.

These experts by experience offered some suggestions where they also see added value:

    • Being an expert mentor to one or more students throughout their entire study career.
    • Co-creating courses
    • Participation in activities organized by the higher education institution that are not directly related to education, such as the 10th anniversary of a course, 100th anniversary of the school, election week of the student association,…
    • Creating volunteer groups among students.
    • Joint research action projects
    • Other courses in Higher Education, the way we work should not be limited to professional education we would like to be involved in a wide range of courses, eg. Sociology, Psychology, Criminology.
